Traveler's Report

Just got back from another cabo trip. I am a fish biologist studying the effects of El Niño on the fishes of Baja. Thought I would share some advice on traveling around down there that is different from the other reports you have,

I have been at several hotels on the strip (CSL to SJC), so far the best deal and the nicest rooms for the price is Fiesta Inn in SJC, $65 for a room for two with ocean view, TV, and lots of hot water; staff is pleasant. I don't agree with another report that said a time-share tour is worth it. I have tried it and we were given the hard-sell for several hours and then the freebies usually have some strings attached . . . watch out, unless you like used-car salesmen (there are no good time-share deals, I believe).

Most people don't seem to know about it but Allegro Airlines (check the internet for phone #) offers $170 round-trip airfares (LAX-SJC). Also the combined flight-hotel offers are excellent deals ($300-400 for 4 days).

Car rentals are expensive, at least $50 a day, be sure to ask for AC in the hot months and check if the car is allowed to go round the point (dirt roads from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo/Los Frailes); if you want a very bumpy ride.

Best snorkeling spot- beach and Bay just south of Punta Pescadero, about 500m S of the hotel- usually calm and clear even if the rest of the area is bad.

Fishing hints: Catches are very different from place-to-place. I would check with other gringo fisherman at your hotels or bars or docks to see how the fishing is before going out. Keep in mind you could go out of Cabo, San José, or La Paz. Best trip yet- out of Bahia de los Muertos to edge of Isla Cerralvo (from La Paz). Fishing has been awful at the east cape during the El Niño (at least in March).

Finally - best taco in Baja - order el Pastor at Erika's taqueria. Its full of locals, very cheap and very friendly, but you have to bring your own beer (just off the highway one long block west of the highway traffic circle in the middle of San José; can't turn down the local street from the highway (its one-way)).
