Traveler's Report

March 2, 1998

We just returned from a quick trip to Guerrero Negro for whale watching. We traveled from San Diego to Guerrero Negro in one grueling drive, with a stop in El Rosario for a great lunch.

The roads were pretty bad much of the way. They had a lot of recent rain and we drove through some downpours, so there was a lot of road damage. There were several wash-outs but two days later on our return they were either repaired or nearly done. There are a lot of really big pot holes, some three feet across and at least one foot deep. But they are hard at work and the worst should be fixed soon, at least until the next rain.

If anyone is unfortunate enough to have to drive at night, be warned that some stretches that have been recently re-surfaced have not yet been striped, and it is kind of spooky on the curves. You just have to be careful.

South of El Rosario the road was pretty good. Basically, if you are crossing mountains the road needs a lot of repair. But approaching Santo Tomás from both sides the road is very good. Watch the speed bumps. They have recently installed really killer speed bumps in Guerrero Negro.

With all the rain, it looks like someone spray painted Baja with varied and vivid shades of green. We have never seen it so beautiful before. There are large stretches of wild flowers, purple, yellow and white. The cirios are all leafed out and beautiful.

We were waved through all the check points in both directions. The ride home was easier as it was all in daylight and some of the road had been fixed.

Good news for all who care for Doña Anita (Mama Espinosa). At 89 she is still going strong. Although she is recovering from pneumonia in Ensenada at the moment, she will be home in a few weeks. Also they are planning to build ten units there starting next month, so we will have a good place to stop and spend the night with rooms and an excellent little restaurant and gift shop.
