I travel this route weekly. I have a home in Puertecitos and try to stay
informed about the road south.
The road has not improved south from San Felipe. Some vados
have been paved but the rest of the road is continually getting
worse. Allow 2 - 2 1/2 hours for the San Felipe-Puertecitos trip,
and remember the days are short.
A mechanic (Taller Panama) monitors the VHF marine
band frequencies in Puertecitos.
The Pemex has gas but it is in cans and
expensive. The runway is in good shape - be sure to file paperwork with the
Orozco family if you land.
The road to Huerfenito is washboard and very
rough, less air in the tires helps a lot. Rumor has it that the money has
been allocated and repairs should happen this year.
Lots of places to stop,
eat and enjoy along the way, so be kind to your oil pan , go slow and enjoy
the scenery. Don't forget the important rule . . . never pass a gas station
unless your tank is full.
Motorcycle riders thru town last week said they
had a very hard time finding gas from Christmas to New Years. Watch for a
new cantina at Campo Serena, km 74, opening this spring, as well as a
restaurant and bar south of Puertecitos at Campo Cristina (Osuna
family).
Lots of older people are selling their houses in the area because
of the difficulty with the road, there are some good deals out there!!!
There is food on the road. Laguna Percebu, Doc Lopez, Laughing Dolfin,
Campo Cesar, Puertecitos (sometimes); Cinco Islas; Punta Buffeo, Papa
Fernandez.
