Here are some thoughts on the questions you raise:

Whales: The Gray whales are "resident" in the Baja California lagoons from late December to March. The primary viewing areas are, south to north, Mag Bay, San Ignacio Lagoon, and Scammon's Lagoon (Guerrero Negro). The best organized tours are probably from San Ignacio and Guerrero Negro. "Petting" of the whales is probably expecting too much, but the tours into the lagoons are very much worth taking.

Diving and Sea Lions: The diving season in the Sea of Cortez is during the summer months. The water is usually clear and warm. The main sea lion location for tourists is about 30 miles north of La Paz (just north of Isla Espiritu Santo).

Travel from Florida: I now live in Florida (West Coast) and have to deal with the travel issue in visiting La Paz two or three times a year. There are, roughly, three options:

Miami -> Mexico City -> La Paz on AeroMexico. This is the most direct flying route.

Miami/Lauderdale -> Houston or Atlanta -> Los Cabos. The route via Houston uses United/Continental, and that through Atlanta uses Delta. The problem here is getting from Los Cabos to La Paz if you're not renting a car. There are several car services which will do the driving for you, or you can try the bus systems.

Miami/Lauderdale -> Los Angeles -> La Paz. This route requires an overnight stay in Los Angeles, and is my least favorite.

: My wife and I (late 60's) want to go whale petting. We are told it is available in Magdalena Bay. Once, in Baja, we would love to snorkel with sea lions and make scuba dives. I am an experienced. certified diver.

: We need to know everything, the absolute best time of the year (whale petting is the priority), flights from Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, hotels, excursion operators. We know nothing; anything you tell us is a help.

: Thank You,
: Marty
