Classical Mechanics versus Thermodynamics

   
It came as a shock when I first realized that some of the most famous equations in thermodynamics are just the same as the most famous equations in classical mechanics — with only the names of the variables changed. It turns out that this follows from a deep and not yet completely explored analogy between the two subjects, which I will explain.
