Things get complicated because the electrons repel each other.
If they didn't, the pattern would be simple. There would be:

2 = 2 × 12 electrons in the first shell:

8 = 2 × 22 electrons in the second shell:

18 = 2 × 32 electrons in the third shell:

and so on!
