Sermersuaq

Sermersuaq

John Baez

Colder, darker glacial music:

Sermersuaq

I made this piece on November 10, 2007. It digs deeper into the glacial theme I began exploring the day before in Kangerdlugssuaq. I took some small fragments that didn't find their way into that piece, and expanded them into a big, dark, cold landscape with very little melody.

I should admit to being influenced by Thomas Köner's chilly, minimalist album Permafrost, which I managed to acquire against all odds with the help of my student Jeffrey Morton. The pieces have frigid titles like Nival, Serac, and Firn... and they're scarily empty, like an Arctic wind over ice fields. Scary... but strangely soothing, too.
