This page was developed in response to a suggestion from DivrDan@aol.com, and a pointer to an information source from Pete Parry. The initial listing was derived from the

I have not included ATMs in Tijuana and Mexicali. They are quite numerous and probably little needed by the general tourist due to the proximity to the border.

I would suggest using ATM machines with a bit of caution until you have established the reliability of a particular machine.

  • Try to use a machine you have seen someone else use successfully.

  • Try to use a machine during business hours.

  • If there is a problem, is there someone nearby who can help settle any differences?

If you encounter unlisted ATMs send me some email with the basic information (address, description of how to find the machine, associated bank, etc.). Also, if you have experience with one of the listed ATMs, either good or bad, send me some email (ftm@math.ucr.edu) and I'll add to the response tally for the machine.

All ATMs listed by Visa had 24 hour availability.

New in '99. If anyone gets detailed information, send me email (ftm@math.ucr.edu).

(February '01) Andre Nicolet reports another good experience: "Used the ATM Feb. 1 in Loreto and it worked GREAT!!! No standing in long lines to change money again."

(November '00) From Andre Niolet: "I used the ATM in Sept. and it worked great. I withdrew 1500p and was deducted $166.33 from my account. No bank fees were charged!"

(February '00) I received the following report of problems with this ATM: After working once, the machine then responded with the message "cannot communicate with your bank, try again later" over a period of several days. A later check with the home bank showed a debit of almost $1000 from the Bancomer ATM.

(September '99) Pete Parry has passed on a report from someone who had been using this ATM regularly. In July the machine began rejecting requests for money from foreign banks. Seems like it would be best to avoid this particular ATM.

Warning!  There is an ATM located in Los Barriles which several people have cited as the source of significant anonymous withdrawals from their US accounts. The wisest course of action would seem to be to avoid using any ATMs in Los Barriles. There may be a sniffing of the input data which allows the thieves to easily tap into external accounts.

    One thing I have found out about ATMs in Mexico - Banamex does not charge a fee. Since our bank (Key Bank) also does not charge - using a Banamex ATM carries no fees.

    All the other bank ATMs - Bancomer, Bital, etc., charge a fee.

  • Received January 17, 2001 from Matthew Scott:

    While in Tijuana, I withdrew 1000 pesos from an ATM machine that was reliable. Tijuana Centro Tijua was the debit on the account. Later that night I went to a different ATM machine. I experienced problems with the machine and could not withdraw any cash. After several attempts, it captured my card and told me to contact my financial institution. The next day after returning to the US, I checked my bank account online and found erroneous debits from a bank called Bital Bit. A total of 5 debits for various odd amounts summing up to just under $500.00 is currently being disputed on my account. Hopefully this will have a happy ending.
