Since the electron can spin up or down, we get 2n² ways to put an electron in the nth shell:

2 × 1² = 2,      2 × 2² = 8,      2 × 3² = 18,

... and so on. And this explains a lot of the periodic table, though it gets more complicated because electrons repel each other!
