Notice the pattern!

Shell 1:

1 = 1² solution

Shell 2:

1 + 3 = 4 = 2² solutions

Shell 3:

1 + 3 + 5 = 9 = 3² solutions

... and so on! The sum of the first n odd numbers is n².
